Autumn on PEI

Confederation Trail in Fall
Couples, golfers and naturalists will love PEI in the fall!

Autumn on PEI is idyllic for couples. Warm days, romantic nights in front of the fireplace, long walks on deserted beaches, perfect weather for hiking and biking, relaxed golf, spectacular foliage, and the feeling that you have the entire Island all to yourself! [Top 10 list]

Although PEI is known as a great summertime destination, more visitors are discovering what Islanders have long known -- that autumn on Prince Edward Island easily rivals summer in its attractions and may indeed be the best season to experience what the Island has to offer! Those with flexible vacation schedules, a love of long walks along deserted beaches, cycling or hiking in wide-open spaces amid rolling pastoral or oceanfront scenery, testing their golf skills against a different course each day, or simply driving leisurely along scenic backroads will find that they have to sacrifice nothing but a swim in order to enjoy spectacular fall foliage and the feeling that you have the entire Island to yourself!

Fall on PEI is a photographer's heaven and a cyclist's dream. The Island takes on a different aura in autumn, as the changing colors of the season transform our scenic vistas. The reds, oranges and yellows of deciduous trees juxtaposed with evergreens, warm-hued grain and potato fields and blue sky and sea make our fall foliage stand out in a region of the world known for its autumn brilliance.

Cyclists visiting PEI for the first time are often surprised to find that its low elevation can translate into such undulating terrain. For those who enjoy this challenge, the north shore region offers great dirt road paths on heritage roads -- some of the oldest on the Island -- which are especially vibrant in autumn. For flatter terrain, there is the Gulf Shore Way in the PEI National Park which provides scenic seaside views, and the 400 km long Confederation Trail which cyclists can travel from tip to tip along a former railway bed which features easily manageable grades and views of the interior of the Island. Hunter River, Breadalbane, and Kensington are the nearest trail heads.

For hikers, there are many community trails, including the nearby Homestead Trail and the Breadalbane Nature Trail, which provide seaside and riverside views, respectively. Other recommended short trails nearby include the Cape Tryon Trail, Devil's Punchbowl Trail, Trout River Community Park Trail, and the Dunk River Trail, but you also can't go wrong walking some of the nearby heritage roads in autumn.

You don't need to miss a ceilidh, lobster supper, or romantic walk on the beach. Sacrifice nothing more than a swim and bring an extra layer of clothing (see weather) to call Cavendish beach, your favorite golf course, or virtually the entire Island your own. Take advantage of our discounted rates, warm September days and crisp evenings spent lounging in front of the fireplace, scenic vistas with a complex palate of colors during our extended fall foliage season, and full slate of fall activities that continue well into October.

There is something for everyone on PEI during autumn, including some of our most popular annual festivals and events (more here), such as Fall Flavours and the PEI International Shellfish Festival. Or create your own discovery of PEI's arts and heritage, among the many sites including the nearby PEI Farmer's Bank, a national historic site due to its influence on the credit union movement in North America and the adjacent Doucet House, one of the oldest on PEI and which provides insight into Acadian culture.

There is still much to do on PEI after summer turns to autumn, so check your calendars and Escape to the Island this fall!
