It is easy to appreciate but difficult to explain the captivating power of seashells. Young children will spend hours examining the shells they will collect along our shore and at Cavendish beach.

The luxurious décor of the master bath includes granite countertop and porcelain tile floor. But nothing means beach, fun and relaxation more than seashells. Perhaps you will collect some shells at the beach today!

Open spaces, pastoral seaside setting

It all begins with an appreciation of the spectacular natural setting. The shifting sands of the living dune environment extend for miles along the PEI north shore, providing shelter for endangered species such as the piping plover), a pristine environment for the study of unique geological formations and ecosystems, and miles upon miles of beaches for you to enjoy (find locations). Heritage roads cut through swaths of forest by the Island's early settlers provide glimpses through treed canopies of the rolling farmland and river vistas beyond.

But there are infinite ways to experience the Island. Whether it be hiking or cycling the well-known Confederation Trail that traverses the Island from tip to tip or some of the many smaller community trails (we recommend the nearby Breadalbane Nature Trail, which also provides a trailhead for the Confederation trail) or enjoying the spectacular views while teeing up on one of its teeing up on one of the nearby premier golf courses, trying your luck at deep sea fishing in the Gulf of St. Lawrence (such as nearby Graham's at the Stanley Bridge wharf), enjoying a sumptuous lobster supper -- that quintissential pei summertime feast -- experiencing uplifting jazz or classical music resonating throughout one of the Island's most distinctive churches, or the down-home Maritime sounds of a ceilidh ("KAY-lee") shaking the rafters of a local Stanley Bridge community hall, there is plenty to captivate a spirit set free a thousand miles from home. There are a million things to do on this "million acre farm," so we know that you will not be left wanting. And before you leave, you will surely have found some insight into the "Island way of life."
Seascape Chalet - tranquility in the heart of the PEI north shore

Fortunately, Seascape Chalet's ideal location allows guests to be as near to or as far from the action as you would like, so you really do have the best of all worlds. Located in the north shore fishing village of Stanley Bridge less than 5 minutes from PEI National Park beaches and all the attractions of Cavendish, Seascape Chalet allows guests to be in the thick of the action at a moment's notice. But the tranquil setting on a private peninsula jutting into picturesque New London Bay also provides you with the opportunity to beachcomb the peaceful shore, paddle a kayak up the Hope or Stanley Rivers or out to the dunes alongside the fishing boats embarking on their daily journey, or simply lay back and relax on the sundeck and against this scenic backdrop let all your cares drift away. Do it all or nothing -- after all, there's always next year...

Planning your Prince Edward Island vacation

Below we have provided an overview of some of the possibilities for a vacation on the north shore of PEI, focusing on the many activities within a 15 minute drive of Seascape Chalet that complement a romantic retreat, family vacation, or golf escape. But the possibilities are endless, so visit the Tourism PEI website for more comprehensive information on anything you will need in planning your vacation. There you will find information on things to do, events, and specialized itineraries. Visit the Green Gable's Shore (formerly Anne's Land) pages for information on the section of the PEI north shore directly surrounding Seascape Chalet.

In the meantime, below is a non-exhaustive list of some of the possibilities for recreation and fun in the Cavendish region of the north shore. Enjoy!
Harness Racing

Horse lovers might also want to experience Islanders' love of harness racing. The season reaches its climax in Charlottetown with the prestigious Gold Cup and Saucer Race during Old Home Week in mid August, and earlier visitors can see harness racing during the mid-July Summerside Lobster Carnival, but a true understanding of the love of harness racing on PEI is perhaps best gained at the small tracks scattered around the Island.

> For a longer excursion, the central location of the Cavendish region allows one to venture either “up west” to experience the Acadian culture of the Evangeline region and native Mi'kmaq culture on Lennox island, or “down east” via the Points East coastal drive to some of the oldest small towns on PEI. Either tip of the island can be reached within a 90 minutes to 2 hours, making either of these scenic drives easily accommodated into your itinerary as a day trip.
Planning a special family vacation?

-- There is something here for everyone!

Relax at home in our luxuriously appointed chalet. Bask in the warm glow of a radiant sunrise and perhaps catch a glimpse of our resident red fox darting across the field. Take in the views from our comfortably furnished living room or while relaxing in the sun and fresh air of the wrap-around front deck. Parents can allow the morning to linger and calmly get ready to set out for the day while the kids enjoy a game, activity, book or video from our extensive collection for children and adults.

Prepare a picnic lunch while the children play on the slide and swing set, invigorated by the fresh seaside air. Photograph the seaside views or the lupins in the front yard.

Explore the shoreline and open spaces of the tranquil peninsula. Snooze on the hammock while the kids examine their beachcombing treasures.

Play ball, fly a kite, or play frisbee with Rover in the acre of adjacent park area with plenty of room to roam. Bike or jog the miles of clay roads. Run over to the pier for boating, jetskiing, windsurfing, or parasailing. Visit a dinosaur museum on your way back.

Put in one of our kayaks at the shore and explore the sand dunes of the PEI National Park or the Hope River estuary in the other direction. Watch the fishing boats in the bay or the oyster farmers inspecting their bounty. Spot a blue heron spying you as you dig for clams along the shoreline.

Revisit the "Anne" era at Green Gables house or Avonlea Village, enjoy a relaxed family outing of healthy recreation at my favorite 9 hole course, or satisfy your child's or teenager's sense of thrill at a nearby amusement park.
Buy fresh lobster or shellfish at Stanley Bridge wharf or sample the seafood at an oyster bar. Try PEI's famous "Cow's" ice cream and buy a T-shirt to commemorate the experience. Walk one of the many community trails over varied terrain, bike and explore the stunning seaside "Homeland Trail", or put in your fishing line at a nearby brook.
Have your postcards stamped at the Cavendish post office museum and check out the range of art and craftsmanship of PEI artisans. Take a deep-sea fishing charter and cook up your filletted catch in our fully-equipped kitchen. With the kids in bed, reflect on a wonderful day while relaxing in a luxurious decor featuring my own original seaside-inspired works in stained glass displayed exclusively for you.

And all this is barely scratching the surface -- drive further than 5 minutes, and the sky is the limit! There are many things to do on this little island -- try to take them all in, or just sit back, relax, and leave the rest til next year...

Think a family vacation must be a compromise? Not this time! Seascape Chalet is especially suited to families, because we've prepared it for you with our own family in mind! Kids are captivated, so adults can relax in our comfortable surroundings.
But perhaps our guests say it best:

The past 11 days have been a great family vacation, and staying at your property had a lot to do with our tremendous experience. From the moment we first stepped into the chalet, we were "breathless," as the decor and scenery were unbelievable. Our two daughters enjoyed immensely the swings and toys during our stay as they both entertained them on a constant basis.

Philip & Dawn, the both of you should be very proud of your property, as the chalet is beautiful, and you have provided everything needed to make a family vacation a great experience. We will definitely be wanting to stay here again on our next visit to PEI.
Those with flexible vacation schedules, a love of long walks along deserted beaches, cycling or hiking in wide-open spaces amid rolling pastoral or oceanfront scenery, testing their golf skills against a different course each day, or simply driving leisurely along scenic backroads will find that they have to sacrifice nothing but a swim in order to enjoy spectacular fall foliage and the feeling that you have the entire Island to yourself!

Fall on PEI is a photographer's heaven and a cyclist's dream. The Island takes on a different aura in autumn, as the changing colors of the season transform our scenic vistas. The reds, oranges and yellows of deciduous trees juxtaposed with evergreens, warm-hued grain and potato fields and blue sky and sea make our fall foliage stand out in a region of the world known for its autumn brilliance.

Cyclists visiting PEI for the first time are often surprised to find that its low elevation can translate into such undulating terrain. For those who enjoy this challenge, the north shore region offers great dirt road paths on heritage roads -- some of the oldest on the Island -- which are especially vibrant in autumn. For flatter terrain, there is the Gulf Shore Way in the PEI National Park which provides scenic seaside views, and the 400 km long Confederation Trail which cyclists can travel from tip to tip along a former railway bed which features easily manageable grades and views of the interior of the Island. Hunter River, Breadalbane, and Kensington are the nearest trail heads.

For hikers, there are many community trails, including the nearby Homestead Trail and the Breadalbane Nature Trail, which provide seaside and riverside views, respectively. Other recommended short trails nearby include the Cape Tryon Trail, Devil's Punchbowl Trail, Trout River Community Park Trail, and the Dunk River Trail, but you also can't go wrong walking some of the nearby heritage roads in autumn.

You don't need to miss a ceilidh, lobster supper, or romantic walk on the beach. Sacrifice nothing more than a swim and bring an extra layer of clothing (see weather) to call Cavendish beach, your favorite golf course, or virtually the entire Island your own. Take advantage of our discounted rates, warm September days and crisp evenings spent lounging in front of the fireplace, scenic vistas with a complex palate of colors during our extended fall foliage season, and full slate of fall activities that continue well into October.

There is something for everyone on PEI during autumn, including some of our most popular annual festivals and events (more here), such as Fall Flavours and the PEI International Shellfish Festival. Or create your own discovery of PEI's arts and heritage, among the many sites including the nearby PEI Farmer's Bank, a national historic site due to its influence on the credit union movement in North America and the adjacent Doucet House, one of the oldest on PEI and which provides insight into Acadian culture.

There is little traffic but also few amenities on this route between Bangor and Fredericton. Distance is longer but travelling time is shorter.
Driving to Canada from Bangor via route 9 to Calais, ME / St. Stephen, NB and then TC 1 via Saint John to Moncton, is a fine option for those who might want to stay overnight in the scenic Bay of Fundy coastal area of St. Stephen or Saint John. Dear Philip & Dawn:
We can't say enough about your beautiful chalet, and how much we enjoyed last week! The chalet was extremely comfortable and so well equipped. It was the perfect place to spend our 20th anniversary, and we can't wait to return! Your treats were delicious and so welcoming on our arrival. The propane stove kept the chalet so warm and toasty that it made the fall nights all the more pleasurable. It was the perfect location too, for exploring PEI. Everything about Seascape is first class all the way! Thank you so much, Philip & Dawn, for providing the ideal place to stay for our vacation.

Warm Regards,
Great cottage, great island, great times! We especially enjoyed the wonderful beaches, Stanley Bridge lobster, Fish & Chips from Cavendish Boardwalk and clamming/ mussel digging along the shoreline. We will remember the beautiful sea breezes and comfortable temperatures when we’re back in the heat of Ontario!
When we first stumbled upon your website regarding "Seascape Chalet' it seemed almost too good to be true. We had wanted to visit PEI for several years and your place looked perfect to explore PEI from. When we arrived, everything was as it had been pictured and described online. The Chalet was equipped with everything we could possibly need. You proved to be a most thoughtful and gracious host and an excellent source of information pertaining to PEI, providing us with invaluable suggestions and recommendations.

Seascape Chalet was just perfect! The kitchen and contained everything one might need. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom and deck were excellent. We ended each day sitting on the deck looking out at the view and drinking wine. We watched several bald eagles in the trees near the picturesque bay. The location was incredible.

You were a great help in making our trip to PEI memorable, going way beyond to make our visit to PEI comfortable and memorable. Thanks for making Seascape Chalet our home for a week!

Thank you so very much for the use of your beautiful chalet with the wondrous views of the bay! The scenery has even enticed our 13 year old daughter (the one who likes to sleep until noon) to rise at 5am to view the sunrise over the waters (this of her own volition!)

Your very comfortable vacation home has been so thoughtfully supplied with everything a family could need or want, from laundry supplies to beach towels, from condiments to badminton rackets!

We really appreciated the lovely gift basket of local wine, cheese and preserves. An introductory taste of PEI.

Our entire family loved it here, with the gorgeous scenery, "refreshing" beaches, the delicious food and the rousing Ceilidhs! And to think we were able to experience it all, while enjoying all the comforts of a (temporary) home.

The National Park pass was a big plus, and we used it almost every day.
You have thought of everything to make vacationing here at Seascape both convenient and comfortable.
We have had two weeks of beautiful weather and have thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We have been coming to the island every year for several years so have seen most of the attractions. However, we have enjoyed our reunion with Des’ many relatives here on the island. We also went to the new casino in Moncton which was fun and spent a day in Charlottetown shopping. Also made our annual trip to the New Glasgow Lobster Supper. The chalet has been so comfortable and a real “home away from home.” We hope to come back next year.
The week and the chalet were exactly as we hoped. In the middle of a three week visit to the Atlantic provinces, we've had a very relaxed and comfortable time in PEI. This was a great centralized location for exploring all parts of the Island (Charlottetown, East Point, North Cape, the national park and provincial beaches). We live in a fantastic country, and each time I explore a new part of it I wonder what drives so many to seek other countries without getting to know our own. Each to their own. But PEI is beautiful, and regardless of the day's weather, there is always something to see and do.

Thank you for your welcome treats. We enjoyed them all and made sure we added some resupply of cheese, wine and preserves to our travel basket. All your recommendations of sites to visit and your discussions about the province added to our stay.
This was our first visit to PEI. The island is spectacular and Seascape Chalet was the perfect home away from home. I had moments of doubt leading up to the trip, having booked the place sight unseen, months before, over the internet, 1400 km away. But from the minute we walked through the door, we knew that we had found the perfect place. Arriving tired, late at night and with three kids in tow, we instantly felt welcome.

The cottage could not be better equipped. You have thought of every tiny detail. Fantastic location, beautiful setting, squeaky clean, attractive and spacious. After fun days playing all over the island, we returned "home" to enjoy your games, movies, kayaks and quiet reading spots at the chalet. The Seascape Chalet enhanced an already wonderful holiday.
We arrived on our 41st wedding anniversary after a long journey from Bar Harbor Maine after flying from the UK, but on getting here it was worth all the effort. Our first morning, we saw a young red fox on the lawn. He was gorgeous. The views and the peace was exactly what we needed. My dream was to visit where L.M. Montgomery was inspired, and now the children have flown the nest I have achieved my dream visit! The scenery is incredible and the people so friendly. One night whilst sitting on the balcony we heard a highland piper! Incredible!
How quickly the time flies by. It seems we just arrived and suddenly it's time to depart. We can say that we had a most enjoyable week. With the co-operation of the weather, we were able to enjoy the beautiful morning sunrises and the equally stunning sunsets from our chalet's great vantage point. With all the comforts of home, the chalet provided us with everything we needed to provide for the requirements of the entire family. In particular, its location afforded us an opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities, from golf to ceilidhs and of course shopping and even the beach (though we knew it would be a little cold in September!).
As soon as we crossed the bridge onto PEI, we knew it was going to be a very special vacation. The cottage was perfect! We especially enjoyed the beach and the ceilidh in Stanley Bridge. We kayaked on the Hope River, swam and found dozens of clams!

We drove on the heritage road near Trout River and the children fished. The deep sea fishing excursion was also highly successful, with a cod and mackerel dinner to finish! We loved beachcombing and collecting many "treasures" as well as pottery from the Village Pottery Store.
Our family drove about 1000 miles from Virginia to get to PEI. This was our second trip. What a lovely place, and we were so fortunate to have beautiful weather. The cool breezes at night are quite a change from northern Virginia. We went deep sea fishing with Andy at Stanley Bridge and caught enough fish for 3-4 dinners. We went to Avonlea Village, which our “too cool” 13 year old loved. Finally, we went to Greenwich to see the dunes – go, by all means, go to Greenwich. The descriptions are just not enough! Take the dunes trail – it is extraordinary! We also went kayaking with Ryan at Outdoor Exhibitions in North Rustico – highly recommended all.
Thanks for such a relaxing vacation in this week of beautiful PEI weather! This "Seascape Chalet" provided everything my extended family of grandchildren could want or need! The swingset with monkey bars and slide has kept the grandkids busy while we were preparing for our day trips or preparing suppers daily.

The chalet was equipped with everything and made our week simple and fun! Coming from our world of such busy lives, this week of bike rides, beachcombing, walks, playgrounds, waterslide park, and family truly shows us what a vacation is all about. We loved the warm breezes on the veranda in the pm and were content just to relax at the chalet!

Thanks for this wonderful memory and for sharing your place with us! Our grandchildren loved it!
Beginnings, by Sarah McBride

Clouds
of peachy shades

A chilly Breeze
weasels its way
through my thin
blue robe

The songs
of many birds
glaze over
the anticipation

Now look!
Over those yonder trees!
Two tiny pinpricks
of dazzling light
wink at me
through the branches
of the pines
beyond
the opposite shore

The sun rises
much more quickly
than I had imagined

I can see
the sun
peek over the pines

This is what
I have come for;
this hope-lifting miracle

So this
is how
beginnings feel

Sarah, age 13, visited PEI in June, 2009 with her family. As the poem relates, Sarah was especially captivated by the sunrises, waking up at 5am (to the great surprise of her Mom) to view the sunrise over the waters. Thank you for sharing your poem, Sarah!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
