One of the best ways to explore PEI's "back country" is to throw the map away and just explore. It is virtually impossible to get lost, and before long, you will end up "somewhere." Horse lovers might also want to experience Islanders' love of harness racing. The season reaches its climax in Charlottetown with the prestigious Gold Cup and Saucer Race during Old Home Week in mid August, and earlier visitors can see harness racing during the mid-July Summerside Lobster Carnival, but a true understanding of the love of harness racing on PEI is perhaps best gained at the small tracks scattered around the Island (Read one person's account).

Scenic Drives

Either tip of the island can be reached within a 90 minutes to 2 hours, making either of these scenic drives easily accommodated into your itinerary as a day trip.

Family Summer Fun!

Planning a special family vacation?

Relax at home in our luxuriously appointed chalet. Bask in the warm glow of a radiant sunrise and perhaps catch a glimpse of our resident red fox darting across the field. Take in the views from our comfortably furnished living room or while relaxing in the sun and fresh air of the wrap-around front deck. Parents can allow the morning to linger and calmly get ready to set out for the day while the kids enjoy a game, activity, book or video from our extensive collection for children and adults.

Prepare a picnic lunch while the children play on the slide and swing set, invigorated by the fresh seaside air. Photograph the seaside views or the lupins in the front yard.

Explore the shoreline and open spaces of the tranquil peninsula. Snooze on the hammock while the kids examine their beachcombing treasures.

Play ball, fly a kite, or play frisbee with Rover in the acre of adjacent park area with plenty of room to roam. Bike or jog the miles of clay roads. Run over to the pier for boating, jetskiing, windsurfing, or parasailing. Visit a dinosaur museum on your way back.

Put in one of our kayaks at the shore and explore the sand dunes of the PEI National Park or the Hope River estuary in the other direction. Watch the fishing boats in the bay or the oyster farmers inspecting their bounty. Spot a blue heron spying you as you dig for clams along the shoreline.

And that's before you even get into your car!

By car, within 5 minutes, you can: build sandcastles or play in the surf at Cavendish beach, ride horseback along a wooded farmland trail, take in a ceilidh at Stanley Bridge Community Hall or tee up at one of three premier 18-hole golf courses. Revisit the "Anne" era at Green Gables house or Avonlea Village, enjoy a relaxed family outing of healthy recreation at my favorite 9 hole course, or satisfy your child's or teenager's sense of thrill at a nearby amusement park.

Buy fresh lobster or shellfish at Stanley Bridge wharf or sample the seafood at an oyster bar. Try PEI's famous "Cow's" ice cream and buy a T-shirt to commemorate the experience. Walk one of the many community trails over varied terrain, bike and explore the stunning seaside "Homeland Trail", or put in your fishing line at a nearby brook.

Autumn on PEI is idyllic for couples. Warm days, romantic nights in front of the fireplace, long walks on deserted beaches, perfect weather for hiking and biking, relaxed golf, spectacular foliage, and the feeling that you have the entire Island all to yourself! [Slideshow][More]

Although PEI is known as a great summertime destination, more visitors are discovering what Islanders have long known -- that autumn on Prince Edward Island easily rivals summer in its attractions and may indeed be the best season to experience what the Island has to offer! Those with flexible vacation schedules, a love of long walks along deserted beaches, cycling or hiking in wide-open spaces amid rolling pastoral or oceanfront scenery, testing their golf skills against a different course each day, or simply driving leisurely along scenic backroads will find that they have to sacrifice nothing but a swim in order to enjoy spectacular fall foliage and the feeling that you have the entire Island to yourself!

Fall on PEI is a photographer's heaven and a cyclist's dream. The Island takes on a different aura in autumn, as the changing colors of the season transform our scenic vistas (view fall slide-show). The reds, oranges and yellows of deciduous trees juxtaposed with evergreens, warm-hued grain and potato fields and blue sky and sea make our fall foliage stand out in a region of the world known for its autumn brilliance.

Cyclists visiting PEI for the first time are often surprised to find that its low elevation can translate into such undulating terrain, and those who enjoy this challenge will appreciate the infrequently travelled paved roads along the north shore in such areas as New Glasgow and Hope River only minutes from Seascape Chalet. The north shore area also offers great dirt road paths and community trails for hikers that are especially vibrant in autumn. For those who enjoy purpose-built trails for hiking and cycling, PEI is proud to have completed the Confederation Trail, the province's section of the Trans Canada Trail along which hikers and cyclists can now travel the interior of the island from tip to tip along a former railway bed which features easily manageable grades.

You don't need to miss a ceilidh, lobster supper, or romantic walk on the beach. Sacrifice nothing more than a swim and bring an extra layer of clothing (see weather) to call Cavendish beach, your favorite golf course, or virtually the entire Island your own. Seascape Chalet is a spacious non-smoking executive summer home with Great Room providing kitchen, living and dining areas under an open beam cathedral ceiling. Adjoining the Great Room is a screened sunroom with easy access to 800 sq ft of wrap-around front and back deck equipped with gas BBQ and fully furnished with Adirondack furniture for adults and children for relaxed outdoor living. Enjoy panoramic water views or a quiet meal and gorgeous sunsets amid a pastoral setting.

The two bedroom cottage comfortably sleeps six. Two luxury bedrooms with adjoining full (4 pc.) baths are each appointed with Queen sleigh beds, large closets and dressers. Quality sheets, bedding, towels and linens are included. A pull-out sofa bed located in the sunroom sleeps two additional guests.

The kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher, refrigerator, oven, stove, microwave, coffee maker, coffee grinder, toaster, all utensils, cutlery, dishes, glassware, linens, Island recipe books and all the accoutrements needed to prepare a truly memorable meal.

With telephone, fax, and free wireless broadband internet, you can choose your desired level of access to the outside world, and a fully stocked laundry room with washer & dryer, iron and ironing board will accommodate your household needs. Satellite TV, DVD/VCR, stereo and a selection of movies, books, and indoor and outdoor games will entertain the whole family. Young children love the outdoor slide, balance beam and swingset, and adults can explore the seaside in the two kayaks provided. Cancellations:

In the event of a cancellation, our refund policy is as follows:

Cancellations 60 days before arrival receive a full refund.
Cancellations less than 60 days in advance receive a full refund if we are able to re-rent the property and do not incur additional expenses; full refund less 10% of rental fee if additional marketing is required; and no refund of deposit if the reservation dates are not re-booked.

Pet Policy:

Recommended route to PEI from:

Central Canada

From Ontario and Quebec, we recommend travel through Canada, as travel through Maine will take at least an additional hour on less travelled roads. Take TC 20 to Riviere de Loup, HWY 185 to Edmunston, TC 2 through New Brunswick via Fredericton and Moncton, HWY 11 and 16 to the Confederation Bridge. For travel through Maine, take rte 212 past Sherbrooke, Quebec to cross the border at Woburn QC / Coburn Gore ME. Take rtes. 27, 16, 8, and 2 to Skowhegan and continue on rte. 2 to meet I-95 in Pittsfield, south of Bangor. In Bangor, take either I-95 to Houlton, or rte. 9 to cross the border in Calais, ME / St. Stephen NB.

Nova Scotia

Haligonians have the option of taking either the bridge or the ferry (in season). After taking exit 15 off HWY 102 in Truro, be sure to pick the correct direction - take 104W to NB for the bridge or 104E to Pictou for the ferry (about 2 hours longer travel time).

United States

We recommend entering Canada via Houlton, ME instead of Calais, especially in summer. From Bangor, take I-95 north to Houlton, ME/ Woodstock, NB and then TC 2 through New Brunswick via Fredericton and Moncton, HWY 11 and 16 to the Confederation Bridge. There is little traffic but also few amenities on this route between Bangor and Fredericton. Distance is longer but travelling time is shorter.

Driving to Canada from Bangor via route 9 to Calais, ME / St. Stephen, NB and then TC 1 via Saint John to Moncton, is a fine option for those who might want to stay overnight in the scenic Bay of Fundy coastal area of St. Stephen or Saint John. This route is more scenic but has reduced speed zones and more traffic. The border crossing can also get busy during peak season.

From Confederation Bridge

Take Hwy 1A toward Summerside. In North Bedeque, turn right onto the Freetown Road (Rte 8) and continue until New London. Turn right onto Rte 6 towards Cavendish. In Stanley Bridge, continue on Rte. 6 - cross the bridge, up the hill, turn left at the intersection towards Cavendish and Seawood Estates is the peninsula to your left about a minute further along, just before you enter Bayview. Turn left into Seawood Estates and take the first right (Bayview Drive). Stay on this road as it bends to the left. Seascape Chalet is the first property on your left.

From Charlottetown Airport

Direct Route (25 minutes)

Take Rte 2 West to Hunter River, then turn right onto Rte 13 towards New Glasgow. Turn left onto Rte 224 (New London Rd.) before you reach New Glasgow, and right onto Rte. 6 towards Cavendish at Stanley Bridge intersection. Seawood Estates is one minute further along Hwy 6 on the left just before Bayview. Turn left into Seawood Estates and take the first right (Bayview Drive). Stay on this road as it bends to the left. Seascape Chalet is the first property on your left.

Scenic Seaside Route (40 minutes)

If you have time and want to start exploring immediately, this route will take you past most of the scenic areas of the central PEI north shore.

From the airport, turn right to take the Brackley Point Rd (Rte 15) toward the north shore. In Brackley Beach, turn left onto Rte 6 and continue to follow it as it meanders through north shore communities until you reach the cottage. Turn right at Oyster Bed Bridge and pass through North Rustico and Cavendish. As you leave Bayview, you will see the Seawood Estates peninsula in front of you extending to the right. Turn right into Seawood Estates and take the first right (Bayview Drive). Stay on this road as it bends to the left. Seascape Chalet is the first property on your left.

We arrived on our 41st wedding anniversary after a long journey from Bar Harbor Maine after flying from the UK, but on getting here it was worth all the effort. Montgomery was inspired, and now the children have flown the nest I have achieved my dream visit! The scenery is incredible and the people so friendly. How quickly the time flies by. It seems we just arrived and suddenly it's time to depart. We can say that we had a most enjoyable week. With the co-operation of the weather, we were able to enjoy the beautiful morning sunrises and the equally stunning sunsets from our chalet's great vantage point. With all the comforts of home, the chalet provided us with everything we needed to provide for the requirements of the entire family. A good time was had by all. We checked out a number of great beaches. We also did some deep sea fishing and between the two of us caught 12 fish! We also enjoyed the Eddie May mystery theatre.

One last item of note -- It always amazes me just how green the island is. I guess in PEI, the grass is NOT greener on the other side! :)

As soon as we crossed the bridge onto PEI, we knew it was going to be a very special vacation. The cottage was perfect! We especially enjoyed the beach and the ceilidh in Stanley Bridge. We kayaked on the Hope River, swam and found dozens of clams!

We drove on the heritage road near Trout River and the children fished. The deep sea fishing excursion was also highly successful, with a cod and mackerel dinner to finish! We loved beachcombing and collecting many "treasures" as well as pottery from the Village Pottery Store.

The cottage was so well equipped, and we appreciated all the time and thought put into the environment.

All of us loved the island, and one week is simply not long enough.

It was a rainy day when we arrived in PEI, but we fell in love immediately with this lovely cottage. You can imagine how we were delighted the next day when we walked into the bright living room with full morning sun.

PEI had been my mother's most desired place to visit since she had read the book "Anne of Green Gables" when she was a little girl. We enjoyed all activities that relate to Anne, as well as PEI's famous seafood.

Our boys also enjoyed their stay. They ran out to the swings whenever they had a chance. We also really appreciated the National Park pass. After we found the white sand beach at Cavendish West, we visited there every day.

Everything we wanted, we received. The chalet itself was a wonderful home after long days at the beach or various excursions. No doubt our return is assured to the Seascape Chalet in the future! Philip and Dawn answered all our questions and filled all our needs as required. Tremendous persons with a great place to stay.

The past 11 days have been a great family vacation, and staying at your property had a lot to do with our tremendous experience. From the moment we first stepped into the chalet, we were "breathless," as the decor and scenery were unbelievable. Our two daughters enjoyed immensely the swings and toys during our stay as they both entertained them on a constant basis.

Philip & Dawn, the both of you should be very proud of your property, as the chalet is beautiful, and you have provided everything needed to make a family vacation a great experience. We will definitely be wanting to stay here again on our next visit to PEI.

We have just had the most glorious two weeks on the Island – sunshine every day except when we arrived and when we departed!! Discovering the Murphy roots in Stanley Bridge and Hope River, meeting relatives that remained on the Island…. Everyone is so friendly, who would ever want to leave!! Seascape Chalet was the perfect home for us to start our day with the perfect water view and end it with a beautiful sunset. Heaven.

What a lovely chalet! We thoroughly enjoyed our time here on PEI and the chalet was a significant reason our vacation was perfect. We explored PEI to our hearts content even though some of the major tourist attractions and restaurants were closed (in the second week of October). The fall foliage here in PEI was breathtaking and we were here at the perfect time.

New Glasgow Lobster Supper – AWESOME!
Cavendish Beach and Dunes – SPECTACULAR (favorite part of our trip)
Any of the numerous pottery shops in the area.
Just let your car lead you around. You never know what beautiful view and scenery awaits you.

Our family drove about 1000 miles from Virginia to get to PEI. This was our second trip. What a lovely place, and we were so fortunate to have beautiful weather. The cool breezes at night are quite a change from northern Virginia. We went deep sea fishing with Andy at Stanley Bridge and caught enough fish for 3-4 dinners. We went to Avonlea Village, which our “too cool” 13 year old loved. Finally, we went to Greenwich to see the dunes – go, by all means, go to Greenwich. The descriptions are just not enough! Take the dunes trail – it is extraordinary! We also went kayaking with Ryan at Outdoor Exhibitions in North Rustico – highly recommended all.

PEI is so relaxing compared to life in Washington DC. Enjoy and relax!

What a nice time we had here in PEI with our two children (ages 2 ½ and 3 months). The Island is a perfect spot for young families like ours!

Having the bedrooms and living space all on one level was very useful, as was having a washing machine and dryer. We had brought our own provisions, so we were surprised to find everything we needed (and more) here.

Our 2 ½ year old loved the swingset, and little things like plastic plates and cups helped us be at ease. The children’s books, Dora puzzle and items in the storage room were also a big hit (don’t children always find other people’s toys more fun?)

A little chilly for the ocean this week, but beautiful and comfortable for sleeping. Thanks for having us.

This is our first trip to PEI and hopefully not our last. From the moment my sister and I walked into the chalet we felt “at home.” The weather in May was not the best - cool and wet - but it did not dampen our spirits. There is so much to see and do that we ran out of days. A magnificent view around every bend in the road. We will be back!

We arrived to a very gusty, rainy PEI. It soon cleared up and we had great weather for the rest of the week. We all enjoyed the beautiful beaches and abundance of seafood. Favourites were Brackley and Ross Lane beaches and cooking lobster “at home.” We appreciated all the little touches that made us call Seascape Chalet home for the week …. So sad to go!

Seascape Chalet provided a restful and fun vacation. Spacious and well stocked, the chalet offers views of ocean and green fields. We would certainly recommend the cottage to our friends and hope to return ourselves. Our weather was sunny every day. The seafood is fabulous and nowhere near the cost in the United States and other Canadian destinations. Theatre and music are everywhere. Good beaches can be found with little exploration.

We had an incredible PEI experience! The cottage was amazing and so thoughtfully stocked. All of the little things we didn’t think about were here. We used the kayaks and all the outdoor toys and games.

On the 17th, Jenn and Scott were married here. We couldn’t have picked a better spot! The view is amazing. It was a trip of a lifetime.

We were comfortably able to entertain family and friends who came by for the wedding. The Park Pass was much appreciated, as we used it most days. We also liked being able to explore the area by walking. Every walk was something new!

We had a great week – not as much sunshine this week as we had hoped, but we still kept very busy! We really enjoyed our “home” away from home – especially all the thoughtful touches in this very clean and fully stocked cottage. The view is beautiful and we found the location excellent when exploring the entire Island!

We enjoyed the fresh seafood and strawberries, Ceilidh at Stanley Bridge, the bands at Carr’s, Brackley Beach, golf, Summerside Lobster Carnival and exploring! The Lobster Supper at St. Ann’s is excellent!

We’ve had a wonderful week! The chalet has been an excellent “home base” to come back to after our daily adventures! This was a terrific experience for our family. The location is great – we found it close to everything we wanted to enjoy. Our six year old son had an amazing time finding mussels on the beach and we even ate them for supper twice (best mussels ever!). Perfectly relaxing week away from work. PEI was everything we expected and more, and the cottage had all the comforts of home. The colours on this island are truly awesome -- vibrant greens, reds and blues. We enjoyed numerous drives around the island, Anne of Green Gables, Anne Gallant's art gallery, and Carr's Oyster Bar. The ceilidh and national park are also must-sees. Thank you for much needed rest and vacation!

Thanks for such a relaxing vacation in this week of beautiful PEI weather! This "Seascape Chalet" provided everything my extended family of grandchildren could want or need! The swingset with monkey bars and slide has kept the grandkids busy while we were preparing for our day trips or preparing suppers daily.

The chalet was equipped with everything and made our week simple and fun! Coming from our world of such busy lives, this week of bike rides, beachcombing, walks, playgrounds, waterslide park, and family truly shows us what a vacation is all about. We loved the warm breezes on the veranda in the pm and were content just to relax at the chalet!

Beginnings, by Sarah McBride

Clouds
of peachy shades

A chilly Breeze
weasels its way
through my thin
blue robe

The songs
of many birds
glaze over
the anticipation

Now look!
Over those yonder trees!
Two tiny pinpricks
of dazzling light
wink at me
through the branches
of the pines
beyond
the opposite shore

The sun rises
much more quickly
than I had imagined

I can see
the sun
peek over the pines

This is what
I have come for;
this hope-lifting miracle

Sarah, age 13, visited PEI in June, 2009 with her family. As the poem relates, Sarah was especially captivated by the sunrises, waking up at 5am (to the great surprise of her Mom) to view the sunrise over the waters. Thank you for sharing your poem, Sarah!
